Insulin must be injected and cannot be taken through mouth. This is because stomach enzymes would destroy the insulin before it could get into our blood stream.
Type 1 diabetes treatment has to be carried on indefinitely. Careful monitoring of blood glucose level is an important aspect of treatment. This can be achieved using a home monitoring blood glucose meter.

Type 2 Diabetes
The person is treated first with weight reduction, a diabetic diet and exercise. When these measures fail to control the levels of blood sugars, oral medications are used. Further treatment with insulin is considered if oral medication is insufficient to control the blood sugar level.
Emphasis is also placed on lifestyle adjustments (diet and exercise).
